A pastor's son in Indiana learned guitar from his father and, in 1996, went west to Bible college in California.
Born in Lafayette, Indiana
Jeremy Thomas Camp was born on January 12, 1978, in Lafayette, Indiana. His father, Tom, taught him to play guitar, and in the early 1990s started Harvest Chapel in the city with about 20 people in a basement.
Calvary Chapel Bible College
In 1996 he left Lafayette for Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta, California. A worship leader heard him playing guitar in the school kitchen and brought him onto the worship team.
Leading worship in Southern California
He left after two years with an associate degree in theology and went on leading worship at churches and Bible studies across Southern California.

Melissa
Melissa Henning, the Bible study where he first saw her, their wedding in October 2000, and the song he wrote after she died.

In 1999, leading worship at a Bible study in San Diego County, Jeremy looked up and saw Melissa Henning worshipping with her hands raised. Her family's home church was Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe.

In 2000 Melissa was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Her response became the line Jeremy still comes back to: if even one person came to faith in Jesus through it, it would all be worth it.

Before any label, Jeremy made Burden Me on his own, an independent record of ten songs that opens with the title track and He Will Come Through.
Jeremy and Melissa marry
Jeremy and Melissa married on October 21, 2000, at Horizon Christian Fellowship in Rancho Santa Fe, after chemotherapy had cleared her cancer. On their honeymoon he wrote Walk by Faith.
Writing I Still Believe
About two weeks after Melissa died, through anger and hard questions, Jeremy sat down with his guitar and wrote I Still Believe. He has said the song came in a matter of minutes.

The cancer came back soon after their honeymoon. Melissa went to be with Jesus on February 5, 2001. She was 21.

Stay
His first label record put I Still Believe on Christian radio, and on tour in 2002 he met Adrienne Liesching, who became his wife in December 2003.
Adrienne Liesching and The Benjamin Gate
Adrienne Liesching grew up in South Africa and sang with The Benjamin Gate, a band formed in Port Elizabeth in 1998. By 2002 the band had moved to the United States and made two records for ForeFront.
Jeremy meets Adrienne
On the autumn 2002 Festival Con Dios tour with the Newsboys, Adrienne was on crutches with a sprained ankle, and Jeremy introduced himself to encourage her. They were engaged in April 2003.

His first record for BEC Recordings, released September 24, 2002, with I Still Believe, Walk by Faith and Stay. Adam Watts and Andy Dodd produced it in Mission Viejo, California.

Jeremy and Adrienne married on December 15, 2003. The Benjamin Gate ended that year, and Adrienne went on to make records of her own as Adie, beginning with Don't Wait in 2006.

At the 2004 GMA Dove Awards he won New Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year, less than two years after Stay came out.

Walk by Faith, the song he wrote on his honeymoon with Melissa, reached No. 1 on Billboard's Christian Airplay chart in 2004.

Carried Me: The Worship Project
His first worship record, released February 10, 2004, closing with the title song, Carried Me. In November 2005 it became the first of his albums certified Gold by the RIAA.

He was named Male Vocalist of the Year again at the 2005 Dove Awards, and Stay, which he wrote, won Rock Recorded Song of the Year.

Open Up Your Eyes
He recorded Open Up Your Eyes for Music Inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia, the companion album to the 2005 film of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Live Unplugged
Recorded live in Franklin, Tennessee, and released November 8, 2005, on CD and DVD. In 2009 the RIAA certified the DVD double Platinum as a long-form video.

ASCAP named him its first Christian Songwriter/Artist of the Year in October 2010. He had been its Christian Songwriter of the Year in 2005, 2006 and 2008.

He told his story in the memoir I Still Believe, written with Phil Newman and published in 2011. Tyndale House published a new edition with David Thomas in 2013, and Thomas Nelson an expanded one in 2020.

The film was No. 1 at the box office on its opening day and No. 3 for the weekend. Days later the pandemic closed theaters across the country, and Lionsgate released it at home on March 27.

Revival

Revival, his next album, comes out in February 2027, after Reflector and Revival, the two rock singles of 2026. This fall he is on the road with MercyMe, in January he joins TobyMac's Hits Deep Tour, and next September he and Adrienne sail the Mediterranean with fans.
